THE OCCASION

As the sun shone brightly on the 11th November, I woke up with a smile on my face. This was the day I and Navdeep were supposed to meet each other for the first time. Our get-together was fixed for 12 ‘o’clock at my maasi’s place who is also Navdeep’s tayeeji. I was actually looking forward to seeing him and at the same time feeling a little apprehensive. I think it was probably the same for Navdeep too as he was also finding it difficult to pass time and waiting for the magic moment!

Navdeep kept on calling me to confirm when we’ll be reaching…which really lifted my spirits. I along with my mom and dad left around 11 in the morning for my maasi’s place. Throughout the way my mind was in a buzz, the whole scene went over and over in my mind --I had seen him in pictures but the thought of actually seeing him was exciting...what will be our reaction while meeting each other…all these questions went in my mind making me a bit nervous.

As we reached there and stopped at the gate, I was expecting Navdeep to open the door for me but..alas..it was my maasi who was cheerfully standing there to receive us! After I climbed the stairs, there was a change in me.I was suddenly confident and was not at all feeling nervous as girls usually are at such situations. My eyes were searching for Navdeep but he was getting ready… And when he came in front of me, my heart skipped a beat…. there he was, my beloved, dressed in blue jeans and a pullover, looking quite handsome and out of place with a sweater in this warm weather! ;-)

We just said hello to each other. And though most girls would feel nervous at saying anything in such a situation, I commented on his warm clothes, which made him laugh because it was ironically me who had suggested him to bring all his woolens, as it would be quite cold here at this time!

In the meanwhile our parents had general discussions
and with our approval formally exchanged sweets and
congratulations poured in for our happiness. Everyone
was happy and, most of all, me and Navdeep as we
had already fallen in love with each other.
The discussions were just a formality and an occasion
to meet each other. We then spent the rest of the day
talking with each other.

There was a small party in the evening and we informed our relatives about the good news. It was a surprise for everyone, as no one knew or had any idea that Navdeep had come to India or that there was any scene of my getting engaged so soon. I guess, this is destiny…Navdeep came into my life, “for it was not into my ear he whispered, but into my heart”.

The date for our Roka ceremony was fixed for November 16…
